Abstract

In the "Complete Lexicon of Plant Names", Georgian nomencla-tural names are primarily presented based on Al. Makashvili's "Botanical Lexicon" (1961). However, due to various noted shortcomings in that work, numerous changes have been made.

Revisions and additions are introduced in the following cases:

1. When there are botanical reasons for defining, differentiating, or regrouping plant species or genera;

2. When the presented nomenclatural name is inaccurate, necessitating correction or replacement with another name;

3. When the name is ambiguous or outdated, requiring substitution with a more modern and widely recognized name;

4. When a plant lacks its Georgian scientific name;

5. When the Georgian scientific names are not aligned with contemporary Latin nomenclature.

In the process of introducing changes or additions, the following are considered: 1. Internationally recognized rules for creating nomen-clatural plant names; 2. Certain established traditions in Georgian scientific literature; 3. The norms of modern Georgian literary language; 4. The widespread usage (popularity) of a given name in Georgia.

The renewal and enrichment of Georgian scientific plant names are based on the following sources: 1. Georgian botanical literature; 2. Old Georgian lexicons and medical treatises; 3. Georgian dialects; 4. Newly created names (neologisms) by the authors; 5. Terms borrowed or translated from other languages, primarily Latin.

The renewal and enrichment of Georgian scientific (nomen-clatural) plant names is a dynamic process.
