Abstract

The new English-Georgian and Georgian-English explanatory online dictionary has been development on the base of the recommendations and proposals provided by the permanent commission of the esteemed International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), responsible for ensuring the accuracy and international recognition of chemistry terms, concepts, laws, and definitions.

The created online dictionary represents the Georgian version of the compendium of chemical terminology published by IUPAC in 2014 as a so-called Gold Book. The Georgian version of the English dictionary is built on the same collocation principle as the English version. In particular, under a lexical unit is indicated a sub-branch of chemistry or a related discipline; next follows the definition of the  term/article; After the definition comes the “See. Also" section and finally - the references. Each of these options is presented as needed. In some cases, a completely new Georgian term was created.

While working on the dictionary, the issues of purely sectoral appropriateness of terms and language normalization-standardization were highlighted.

In the direction of the field, it became necessary:

1. Editing of the definition and writing of the existing terms (in accordance with the rules of transliteration, as well as considering the use of punctuation).

2.Agreement/ establishment of new terms, in particular, new terms that were not used in the Georgian terminological system of chemistry entered the scientific circulation.

3. Clarifying and correcting the definitions of terms, taking into account the Georgian scientific knowledge of chemistry.

The dictionary contains about 4,500 terms that meet the standards of modern chemical terminology. Work on the online dictionary will continue continuously and new terms will be added or edited the existing ones due to the new recommendations of IUPAC.
