The Etymology and Semantics of Certain Dendrological Terms

Abstract

Since immemorial times, in all religions and societies, trees have been attached to special significance. Hence, the paper analyzes the origin of tree names and the symbolic meaning of trees in diverse cultures. Research has proved that tree symbolism is related to life, fertility, gods and superstitions. These concepts are reflected in the dendrological terms. The analysis embraces the etymology of Latin and Greek names of trees. In this regard, research has revealed several concepts on which the tree names are based, for instance, function, shape, colour, smell and other parameters. Dendrological terms related to tree species reflect the culture, world vision and mythology of the region where they are widespread. The research also focuses on the English and Georgian idioms and proverbs related to various species of trees, grouping them based on the positive and negative connotation. In addition, the paper analyzes certain English/American and Georgian toponyms and anthroponyms obtained from the names of trees.
