Some Terms from Tao Georgian

Abstract

In the recent period, linguists pay special attention to the study of the speech of the descendants of emigrant Georgians living in Turkey.

The observation and analysis of the current speech of the Georgian population of the Chorokhi basin confirm that the lifestyle, traditions, family and economic activities of the people and their vocabulary are an integral part of the unified Georgian cultural-historical space.

From the "countries" of the Chorokhi Basin (Imerkhevi, Klarjeti, Shavsheti, Tao), special attention is paid to Georgian Tao and the ancient word forms and terms preserved in it.

Cattle breeding, farming, beekeeping, and fishing – these are the fields that the population of the Georgian villages of Tao has been following since time immemorial.

From the above-mentioned fields, several terms attract our attention:

Kodi, Kodi gurgvali – a bee house (the term kodi is used in Tao with different meanings, and one meaning is related to beekeeping);

Laferi/shisha kovzi – honey extractor/honey squeezer;
Mkedi – thread (thread tied to the loop);
Fkhai – a fish bone; Kaltavari – a hayloft;
Sakhelo – cowhide;
Macha – a plough handle;
Saforchkheli – a type of broom;
Satsuri – cheese grater;
Sakhilai – a knife for taking out honey from the bee house; gamokhilva – taking out honey from the bee house;

The study of the speech of the Georgian villages of the Chorokhi Basin continues. It is interesting to describe the terms found in the speech of Tao Georgians and to compare them with the materials of the Georgian language Samkhuri and other dialects. This is what determines the novelty and relevance of our research. At the same time, it will contribute to and enrich the creation of a unified picture for the purpose of studying the Georgian language.
