The subject of our interest is terminological pair – periphrasis – paraphrase, each from the pair is considered as synonym by some linguists even today. The illustration of this phenomenon is the fact that in the dictionaries, encyclopedias or in other reference literature, that has been published in the last 10-15 years the definition of one word in the pair is followed by the description that it is identical to the other one.
The pair were absolute synonyms in the past, that means they had zero position, today they already distribute contexts, ‘’distribution of context’’ has already begun and is formalized in the terminological system of some languages. Scientific sites of Russian, English, French and Spanish (may be of other languages too) dictionaries and encyclopedias when looking for pair – periphrasis – paraphrase, give special instructions and warning not to confuse one with another.
Paraphrase means repetition of someone’s text using different words, whereas periphrasis is the type of trope, which uses several words for describing one (or two) word concept. One thing they have in common is that both of them are representation of report. Only this information is enough to see the difference in two texts given by the means of paraphrase and periphrasis: paraphrase is far more extensive than periphrasis.
According to the information mentioned above, it can be concluded that, the synonymous relationship between the parts of the pair is shifted to patronymic relationship after the differentiation of meaning. While paronyms are considered as a matter of the speech culture inside a language, in the terminological system and scientific discourse it represents an epistemic problem and can damage this field. Hence we consider it to be necessary for the Georgian dictionaries and encyclopedias that are going to be published, to distribute this words as separate unites with an appropriate meaning.
