Historical Units of Mass in Georgia, the Terms “Litri” and “Litra“

This article presents the historical units of mass, litra and talanti, as defined in The Georgian Dictionary (ლექსიკონი ქართული), by the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Georgian lexicographer, diplomat, and scientist Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani. Table (A) shows the correspondence of the Georgian unit talanti / zodi to the Roman unit talent. The results are organized in Tables B and C, which provide the modern equivalents of old units and highlight the difference between the modern term "litre" (the unit of volume) and the old term "libra" (the unit of weight). The units for measuring gemstone weights defined by King Vakhtang VI of Kartli (1675 – 1737) are given in tables (D) and (E) in the article.
