Dialectological Material – the Source of Georgian Scientific Terminology

Abstract

Terminology is a synthesis of literary and scientific languages. In all languages, including Georgian, terms enter from the system of the common literary language – a general word is given a specific function in the
terminological field.

In scientific terminology, a number of words with a foreign origin appear that, in some ways, create a certain system with their own rules of adaptation. Borrowing is an inevitable process in all languages that is conditioned by interlinguistic and scientific contacts.

Naturally, the process of borrowing includes a threat for a language, so terminologists have always tried to find a source that can prevent excessive borrowing. In this respect, it is of great importance to find specialized vocabulary in the dialects and use it in different scientific fields. So, a number of terms have been created with their own linguistic means, which, we believe, was a justified way of coining new terms; even today, they should be appropriately reflected in the Georgian terminological
databases in order to facilitate their use.
