This article presents the difficulties identified in the process of compiling the working version of the Georgian-English dictionary of water-related concepts. This dictionary is based on the dictionary of water-related words compiled by Lela Giglemyan, found in a sub-link of subject-specific dictionaries in the electronic database of the Arn. Chikobava Institute of Linguistics.

Along with that, in cooperation with the TSU English Philology Department and the Department of Translation Dictionaries and Scientific Terminology of the Arnold Chikobava Institute of Linguistics, an extensive Georgian-English thematic dictionary is being prepared which will eventually contribute to the description of the Georgian language.

The article reviews the attempts of finding corresponding English equivalents for lexical units based on the analysis and classification of the same word-concepts.

For example, in the article, the river and the names associated with it are split into thematic subgroups. In Georgian language, the following names are used to denote different types of rivers: ღარტაფი, ღელე, ღელღული, ხევი, ჩქერი, ჭორომი, ფონი. Based on the research, we find it possible to define the following: ღელე and ღატაფი, as synonyms, can be expressed by the common English equivalent stream. Comparing the semantic meaning of ჩქერი, ჭორომი, ფონი and presenting them in the form of a table gives us a different picture from the existing one.

The English equivalents of the majority of lexical units are confirmed in the existing dictionaries, although the accuracy of some of them is questionable.

The process of compiling a bilingual thematic dictionary revealed the need to create a thematic vocabulary and prevent ambiguity and diversity of concepts along with the need to standardize Georgian terms.

Thematically grouped Georgian-English matches demonstrate the diversity of Georgian vocabulary related to water. Georgian word-concepts denoting water are mostly based on dialectal forms, which creates a rich lexical base, but requires a thorough study of the corresponding Georgian and English entry articles and their semantic fields.
