“The Georgian Dictionary”, published in Paris in 1948, is an important publication not only from a lexicographical, but also a historical point of view. Its peculiarity is determined by several factors: 1) The dictionary was compiled by Shalva Skamkochaishvili and Mirian Melua, Georgian publicists who immigrated to Paris after the Sovietization of Georgia; 2) The dictionary was published by Davit Kheladze, a member of the Social Democratic Party, a Georgian publisher who also emigrated from Georgia after its Sovietization. He was the founder of a Georgian printing house in Paris; 3) The dictionary was intended for Georgian emigrants and aimed at explaining forgotten Georgian words and foreign words that had been “rendered into Georgian”.

“Georgian Dictionary” is a 130-page lexicographic work, which includes hundreds of lexical entries arranged alphabetically and is based on sources such as the dictionaries by Sulkhan-Saba, Davit Chubina-shvili, Raphael Eristavi, Ioseb Imedashvili and Vukol Beridze. In the preface, the authors talk about the purpose and importance of the dictionary; They note that “in the process of its growth, the language rejects or changes obsolete words”. They list the ways of changing and enriching the lexical fund of the language such as losing words, changing meanings and borrowing them from foreign languages.

The paper aims to discuss the so-called forgotten Georgian words on the example of “The Georgian Dictionary” compiled by the Georgian emigrants and published in 1948 in Paris, in Davit Kheladze printing house; to compare the meanings of specific entries with the meanings given in dictionaries of the Old Georgian language, and to emphasize their semantic features.
