The issue of determining the norms for the Literary Georgian language has become an agenda item since the unification of the Georgian state, and consequently, the creation of a common Literary Georgian language. In the past, this problem has been addressed at various times using different means and with a broad scope. The definition of norms has become much more refined since the state commission for the Georgian language was created.

Nowadays, this commission does not exist and certain problems have arisen as a result:

Many outdated norms should be changed in Georgian speech.

Many improper variants appear beside the correct forms, which should be taken into account.

In the last few years, many foreign words (a statistical high), terms and word combinations entered the Georgian language and urgency is required to define their correct equivalents.

From the above-mentioned, it is necessary that an orthographic dictionary be revised and an electronic comprehensive version (taking into account all forms: word combinations, old and new ones) be created.

The solution has not been found due to the non-existence of a commission. These problems have proven difficult to resolve and the out-of-date and discontinued use of forms in speech disgraces the reputation of the whole orthographic dictionary.

To sort out this uneasy situation, it is necessary and urgent to create a state commission to define the norms for the Georgian language. At this stage, it is possible (as this issue is very urgent) to establish a state commission within the Arn. Chikobava Institute of Linguistics (certainly providing inclusion of some invited specialists and other representatives of the society). In general, if there is a desire and possibility, the next stage will be to subordinate the commission to other higher institutions (the precedent of this fact has existed in Georgia for many years).
