The Persian language, a leading regional language for centuries, also faces terminology-related challenges. It is of utmost importance for Persian to develop specific terminology to replace foreign loanwords.
In Iran, efforts are being made to reach a point where every new concept is expressed using Persian word stems and derivational suffixes or affixes.
Three Iranian academies have played particularly important roles in the creation of terminology. The first academy, known as the Academy of Iran (1935–1941), began its work by removing foreign words, especially Arabic ones, from the Persian language. During this period, the foundation for the creation of scientific and technical terms was laid.
The second academy, also called the Academy of Iran (1970–1980), enriched the Persian lexicon with words used alongside those from European and Arabic languages. The academy created a wide range of synonyms, although some of these new terms failed to gain widespread acceptance in Persian.
The key task of the third academy, the Academy of Persian Language and Literature, is to expand the Persian lexicon, particularly its terminological component.
