The correct usage of terms is very important not only in banking, but in any field of science. The origin of banking can be traced back to the ancient world. First bankers were so called “trapezits”. In IV-V centuries usurers and moneychangers appeared in Georgia.
The article concerns the importance of terminology work and reminds us Ilia Chavchavadze and his contemporaries’ – N. Nikoladze, D. Kipiani, G. Tsereteli – great work in compiling the terminology of banking. Number of words were taken by lending or just translating from Russian. For example, official – чиновник, item – товар, costs – Цена, value – Ценность et cetera. Share, obligation, firm, banker are the part of international words Ilia used to use. Thinkers of 19th century had very principal attitude towards the question of terms. They tried to translate foreign terms to become familiar with Georgian language and sound like native words.
The modern situation in terminology of banking is clearly seen in text-books, in specific banking operations. We have compared text-books of banking taught at universities. The study showed that the situation is not satisfactory. You can see different names for the same terms in different books. It’s worth to mention here that in cases of having the right equivalent of the term in Georgian, they prefer to use foreign ones. Sometimes both variants are written, Georgian in brackets. Mostly the terms are taken from English without translating and the way they are formed in Georgian, also differs. One can see Pay Express (pie ekspresi), Provider (provaideri), (written in Georgian letters), while eLoan სესხი is written in both – English and Georgian languages.
Unfortunately, the attitude of thinkers of 19th century differs from the modern attitude. Obviously, the way out of this chaotic situation is the cooperation of linguists and subject field experts.
