Multilingualism and multiculturalism have been historically cha-racteristic to Spain. According to 1978 constitution, Castilian was considered as an official state language, but the constitution also provided that Catalonian, Basque and Galician would be co-official languages in the respective regions.
Spanish constitution, admitting multilingual and multicultural character of the country, on the one hand, ensures stability and expansion of the domi-nant Castilian language and, on the other, stimulates and facilitates the revival of the less frequently spoken languages (Catalonian, Galician, Basque, etc.).
There are some other languages spoken in Spain that have not been given an official status yet. In some cases the names and even number/quantity of languages are subjects to discussion and argument. For instance, Asturian (bable) and Aragonese are viewed as independent languages and their grammars and dictionaries are being published in modern-day Spain.
Language normalization laws have been passed to support regional languages. The majority of these laws also contain instructions to the admi-nistrative bodies responsible for the implementation of the law.
