The translation of technical texts always differs from any other type of linguistic activities since the translator of technical texts requires knowledge in specialized dictionaries, encyclopedias and technical literature in both languages together with linguistic competence. Accordingly, on the one hand, the problems are associated with collecting the said dictionaries and
literature and selecting such special terminology from this data that is required
for the specific translation; on the other hand, if such terminology does not
exist, the translator should offer terminological units for further use based on
the analysis of the relevant concepts of the field.
“The Terminological Standard” is a document that describes different
approaches to terminology management. The terminology management
means fulfilling various tasks including data collection, development, storage, revision and dissemination. The documents titled as “Terminology, Foreign
Languages and Content-Oriented Resources” prepared by the technical
committee of the International Organization of Standards (ISO/TC 37) serve the said purpose.
The paper discusses the section SC 2 of the documents TC 37 the main
task of which is describing and structuring the terminographic and
lexicographic work methods. Accordingly, the composition of the paper is as follows: 1. The description of the interrelation between lexicography and terminography; 2. The overview of the main parameters of translation-oriented terminography (based on ISO 12616: 2002 and ISO/AWI 12616-1); 3. The future prospects.
