The article discusses issues of language policy in Lithuania, with a focus on the current state of language policy, its legal base and challenges. It introduces the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language
– the main State institution which is in charge of the implementation of
Language policy in Lithuania.
The State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (further – Language Commission) is a State institution, accountable to the Parliament of Lithuania. The Language Commission shall be comprised of 17 members, appointed and dismissed upon the recommendation of the Committee on Education, Science and Culture of the Parliament. Candidates to be appointed to the Language Commission may be proposed to the Committee by universities, research institutions and creative societies. The members of the Language Commission are appointed for a five-year-term. The decisions of the Language Commission are obligatory for the State and municipal
institutions, all of the offices, enterprises and organizations operating in the Republic of Lithuania.
The Language Commission shall decide issues concerning the implementation of the Law on the State Language, establishes the directions
of regulating the Lithuanian language, decides the issues of standardization
and codification of the Lithuanian language; appraises and approves the most important standardizing language works (dictionaries, reference books,
guidebooks and textbooks), etc.
The Law on the State Language is the principal document that establishes the principles of language policy. The Law established the use of the state language in the public life of Lithuania, protection of the state language, supervision, and liability for violations of the Law on the State Language. The Law stipulates that laws and other legal acts of the Republic of Lithuania shall be adopted and promulgated in the State Language, and
all institutions, establishments, enterprises, and organizations which
function in the Republic of Lithuania shall manage filing work, accounting,
and reporting, financial and technical documents in the State Language. TheThe
State Commission of the Lithuanian Language has the power to establish
the trends and tasks of State Language protection and approving linguistic
norms, the enforcement of this Law being delegated to the Language
Inspection.

The presentation also discusses the current state of terminology in
Lithuania presents terminological research carried out in the last five years, analyzes ways of Lithuanian terminology management, gives a brief overview of the resources of Lithuanian terminology, and introduces the most important electronic resources.
